Island have reissued just about everything else they did in the 70s, whether it sold or not, it’s time they did the same for Joe.
And the Australian pressing is cut from a tape about 3 generations down, covered in hiss. Even a Monarch test press, from way up in the chain and hardly played, is just okay. The original LP is a Ludwig Sterling cut but Stranger in a Strange Land is so sibilant that the SSSSes break up even on brand new sealed copies being played with a microline stylus, which is a drag when a song’s called SStranger in a SSStrange land - the “such a sight to see” line is a world of pain. I love this album and it’s much better for the time he spent away from the industry. I went through a stage of buying as much Joe South as I could lay my hands on, but I still have a wishlist: The Raven reissues are fairly natural sounding issues, the first few albums aren’t what you’d call audiophile by any stretch (a few too many reduction mixes starting to bite I think, diminished tops) but they’re faithful to the LPs. He’s an excellent cerebral singer/songwriter who as others have said, was big at the time but time has passed him by.
